Early Life
Tony Danza was born Anthony Salvatore Iadanza on April 21, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents are the bookkeeper Anna Mary Camisa, and Matthew Anthony ‘Matty’ Iadanza, a sanitation worker. Though he was raised in Brooklyn and later in Long Island, his heritage comes from Italy. His mother and his paternal grandparents were all Italian immigrants.
Education
Danza has previously said that he was a difficult student throughout his education, including his years at Malverne Senior High School. He successfully graduated from the University of Dubuque with a degree in history. Nevertheless, he entered this university through a wrestling scholarship. This is because he particularly excelled as a wrestler rather than an academic.
Boxing Career
Though Danza began his martial arts training in wrestling, he built a career in boxing. His career began when his friends signed him up for the Golden Gloves, where he won second place. After his near win, he decided to become a professional boxer from 1976 – 1979. During his years of boxing, he had 8 wins and 3 losses in the middleweight division.

While Danza was still a boxer, he was scouted by a producer. His first role was in ‘Taxi’ (1978 – 1983), where he played the taxi driver and part-time boxer Tony Banta.
